a slightly reworked version of a graphic going round at the mo
(alt text: venn diagram with a light blue background and three entirely separate circles for “GENDER IDENTITY”, “SEXUAL ORIENTATION” AND “BIOLOGICAL SEX”)

given that a lot of people commented “but that’s not a real venn diagram”, see my explanation of why it works

incredibly grateful for the comments from valeriekeefe, which I’ll just add verbatim:
Hey, you fucked that one up… you got biological sex occupying a different space from gender identity, or did you mean to write (Neurological) Sex where you wrote Gender Identity, and Genital Morphology where you wrote Biological Sex.
My midbrain and the way it came together are pretty goddessdamned biological, and have a lot more to do with how I’ll further the species than whether we call a certain set of nerve endings a labia or a scrotum.
then after asking for clarification, valeriekeefe:
So many people repeat this cissexist meme, and what’s worrisome is that it often originates with trans people, which makes it no less cissexist and worthy of callout as when Michelle Bachmann says something cismisogynistic.
Sex and Gender are the same thing. Cisnormative treatment of sex being the same as how someone’s genitalia look at birth, or for that matter how they present this second?
I would consider this: Is someone with a prosthetic set of limbs, organs, and cranium not biologically human? If your brain was removed and replaced with a computer, would the result be biologically human?
To my mind, neurology, expressed subjectively since that’s the only way you can express neurology, is the only legitimate metric of sex in a sapient species with sexually dimorphic neurology, which humans are.
there’s not much use taking the photo down now, but if you’re reblogging from scratch please don’t delete these additions!
