today I’m thinking a lot about white queer people appropriating AAVE and/or the language of PoC queer people and ball culture for their own funsies
almost entirely driven by everyone’s (justified!) love of RuPaul and the film Paris Is Burning, far as I can see. and I get it, we need more queer role models etc., especially ones that advocate fucking about with gender presentation in non-normative ways. but can’t white queers create their own culture without taking and morphing PoC queer culture?
some reading:
On Appropriation: Having A Kiki About Throwing Shade and Appropriation Without Credit, about on Scissor Sisters’ “Let’s Have A Kiki”
Mopping Drag Slang (but this one also uses the word “ladyboy”, so…yeah)
y’all really need to think twice before you feel like using aave/ball culture slang because you’re probably doing it wrong
What do you think, mob?
