Dude goes over to help some people. Sees a 30 metre high fire swirl which “sounded like a fighter jet”.
Fire tornadoes (also known as fire devil) are caused by columns of warm, rising air meeting a ground fire. They normally last about two meetings, and happen rarely.
This thing lasted 40 minutes.
Nature is fucking terrifying.

Susiya: Standing up to the Bulldozers

More than 400 Palestinian, foreign and Israeli activists gathered on Friday 22 June 2012 in Susiya, a small village in the south of the West Bank, to protest against Israel’s plan to demolish 50 of the village’s structures, including 20 residential tents which house over 100 people.

The protesters were met by a swarm of Israeli soldiers, policemen and special-forces using tear gas and sound grenades to stop the march.

The Israeli authorities declared that the 50 structures, effectively the entire village, had to be demolished as they were built without a permit. If the demolition orders are carried out, it will the fifth attempt by the Israeli government to expel the residents of Susiya from their lands.

Young boys of the Shan tribe in northern Thailand undergo a ritual known as “Poi Sang Long.” They dress in bright colors, wear makeup, and adorn themselves with flowers. The purpose of the ceremony is to mimic the young Prince Siddhartha before he became Lord Buddha. To a Westerner, or person unfamiliar with the tribe’s customs, these adolescent males could easily be mistaken for young girls.

Finland-based photographer Kenneth Bamberg — who has focused his body of work on questioning the cultural and societal constructs of gendered norms and identities — points out something compelling. “Even though the purpose of the ritual is to show that the boys are on their way to become mature and responsible men, it is loaded with aesthetic values and free from any physical trials. This is what sets it apart from other typical male rituals… ”

Turkey drops anti-abortion legislation
Turkey’s conservative government has dropped plans for a controversial bill that would have slashed the time limit for abortions.

"The government has backed away from initial plans to curb abortion rights," an unnamed parliamentary source told the AFP news agency on Friday. The source said that the Islamist-rooted government would instead seek to limit the number of Caesarean sections being performed in the country.

The legislation, initially proposed by the ruling Justice and Development Party (AKP), would have required all abortions to take place within the first six weeks of pregnancy, down from the 10 weeks currently allowed.
Experts said the limit would have effectively outlawed abortions, since most women do not realise they are pregnant until around the sixth week of pregnancy.

Five-year-old Tamara Brown fires clay bullets at “terrorists”. Israeli settlers from Gush Etzion run a shooting range for tourists where they can “pretend-shoot a terror operative…hear stories from the battleground, watch a simulated assassination of terrorists by guards, and fire weapons at the range.”
Upon entering the range, Tamara burst into tears; a half hour later, she was holding a gun and shooting clay bullets like a pro.
